'I haven’t been taking my musical talent very seriously' says BORSTOL

Bathandwa ‘Borstol’ Bandla an underground rapper (19 years old) was born and raised in the dusty streets of Khayelitsha in Cape Town. Where he was raised by his aunt Vuyiseka Thelma Mapeyi, who today he considers her as his mother since he was raised by her. He lost his mother and father at a very young age (if you heard some his songs, he mentions this) and he was therefore was raised by his aunt. He attended his primary school at Holy Cross Primary School in Woodstock and he recently matriculated from Glendale Sec School in Mitchells Plain. He is now currently studying at the University of the Western Cape doing his first year.
He fell in love with Hip-hop music at the age of 11 with the inspiration of the likes of P’zoh, Zanzolo, Rattex and internationally, it was Eminem, Dr Dre and the list goes on. “These rappers played a huge role in making me the lyricist I am today. I used to sit in my room and write my favorite rapper’s lyrics and at the age of twelve I started writing my own lyrics, I was in grade 7 then. I used to perform for my friends and classmates; I also participated in a lot of arts and culture activities. At high school, I was growing and so were my writing skills.” After 4 years of writing songs, he met up with a guy who had the same passion for hip-hop as him Onke “Don” Mathe who is the founder of ( Mic Pigeons Production) alongside with Siphamandla “DJ Hoodfly” Marenene where he recorded his first song titled “Khayelitsha Motherf#@kers” (available on www.kasimp3.co.za/borstol ). He then formed a crew going by the name “Devil Must Cry” (DMCs) with Abongile “ABO” Dingiswayo (ABO Records) Mdumiseni ‘Jay Blunt’ Mandla and Siyolise “Probling” Magadla, who he claims to be more than crewmates but are very friends.

"I haven’t been taking my musical talent very seriously, in a year I only perform 3 or 4 times. My biggest performance was last year at Ikasi Experience where I shared the stage with my crew mate and friend Jay Blunt in front of a big crowd. Last year I also released a track titled “200 Bars” which received good feedback from the hip-hop lovers and until today I’m still receiving positive feedback. And in 2011 I also released a track titled “Focus On The Future” which is was on my free mixtape (available on www.reverbnation/borstol ). My recent songs are "I who I am" and "Superman" featuring Bravo Le Roux. Every year I set a challenge for myself, like last year I pushed myself over my limits when I wrote ‘200 Bars’ and I recently lost my first battle ever last month, that was one was of my goals for this year to have a battle. One day I will go big, and once I go big I’ll never back again. All I can tell you is that, I don’t settle for less.”
